That Summer Break Feeling

It’s January. To most of the country right now, heck, to most of the Northern Hemisphere right now, that means snow, snow, and more snow, with maybe a little more snow mixed in. But to me, here in sunny southern California, that means Santa Ana winds and heat! It’s 80 today, it was 80 yesterday, and it’ll be hotter than 80 tomorrow. And while I love, and I mean absolutely love cold weather, I’m so not complaining right now! Because it’s a new year, I woke up today about 97% over my cold, and I’ve got that anything-can-happen-I-am-invincible-summer-break-feeling.

You know that feeling you get when the sun is shining, the wind is blowing, and you just feel great about being alive? Yeah,  that’s my summer break feeling. And I think today I’m going to have an adventure. Maybe walk my dog and actually leave the

house for the first time in a week. Maybe get in my car, roll the windows down, and drive down my favorite horse-filled street with the country music blaring. Maybe I’ll just clean my room, which could prove to be the most dangerous task I ever undertake seeing as I’ve been neglecting it for…ever.

Any way you slice it, these don’t sound like fascinating, mind-blowing, adrenaline-pumping kinds of things. But I’ve got that summer break feeling and anything is possible. I wish I could grasp this feeling whenever productivity is calling my name and I’m just too tired, too cold, or too lazy to do anything about it. I want to challenge myself, in this new year that I’ve gotten a late start on, to find that summer break feeling any time of year, and really just hold on to it as long as I can. I could watch a movie with a beach (“Holiday in the Sun,” “The Moon Spinners,” and “Summer Holiday” are really useful for this!), listen to my motivational/travel playlist because every one of those songs just seems like it should be blasted on PCH* with the windows all the way down. And there’s always books; because books are truly the best way to travel on a budget I think!

However you do it, in whatever form, I challenge you to find your summer break feeling. There’s nothing better than thinking of the sun and being in a good mood when the weather outside is frightful. I think you’ll be surprised what adventures you’ll find and in what places once you’ve found it. Even laundry (my most hated chore) suddenly finds some (small) appeal, but hey, that’s more than it has on a wintry day!

So have fun, go on an adventure, and enjoy that summer break feeling!

Interac Offer of Employment!!!! (+ Video!)

Hey all!!

I GOT THE JOB!!!! On December 18th, 2013 I was offered employment by Interac Co., Ltd. It was so exciting!!! I was nervous all last week because my recruiter had said I would hear back from Tokyo before their break on the 23rd. And as my packet was sent off to them on the 13th it HAD to be that week! So I refused to check my email after 10pm because if I actually got the job I wanted to be able to share it with someone without waking them up… Therefore, every morning I woke up and checked my email. Religiously. And on Wednesday it paid off when I saw the wonderfully joyous email that I could read far enough ahead in the preview line to see that it said “our pleasure”! That means only one thing: I AM GOING TO JAPAN!!!!! Going to JAPAN!!

Nothing is containing my excitement anymore and yet it doesn’t seem as if it could POSSIBLY be real! I mean, living in Japan for a year? That’s something you dream about but never actually DO, right? I honestly don’t think I will believe it’s happening until I step off the plane in Tokyo and realize I have no idea what anyone around me is saying! As I’ve never left the country before I am SO STOKED for this brand new adventure and all the wonderful and even awful experiences I am sure to have! Stay tuned cuz this dream just got really real!

Have a beautiful holiday season and I’ll see you in the new year! JAPAN!!!! YAAAY!!!

Thankful for My World

Image
Some of the merry crew on a trip post-Christmas a few years back. More blessed time spent all together :)

Today in the United States it is Thanksgiving Day. Most people around the world see it as a holiday where we Americans stuff our faces and scream at the TV when our football team fumbles, and it’s true, that’s always been a part of my family’s celebrations.

But we also know that we are lucky to be here, in a country where so many different kinds of people are accepted and free to believe and live in the ways they see fit, and above all we know just how lucky we are to have a large and loving family to support each of us any time we may need it. My family is loud and opinionated and politics are strictly forbidden at any holiday table (for good reason!),but we always know that no matter what, we have each other and we absolutely love any excuse to all get together and be crazy where no one is around to judge (because believe me, they would!). Thanksgiving and Christmas are really the only holidays that happens anymore as all the kids (including myself) grow older and so we cherish this time more than any other. In short, we are thankful.

This is the part that a lot of people don’t realize about THANKS-GIVING. And though there is the monthly countdown list people keep of what they are thankful for, a lot of times as the days wear on, they forget why they even bother in the first place and have to play “catch up”. But I believe that being thankful for the people and the gifts you are given in life should be more than one item on your list per November day, but should be a mindset almost. I realize this won’t always happen, as human beings we will never be able to always be grateful for that dang blister or that burnt toast (flippin’ toaster!). I know I’m not. But I was very moved by the challenge The Ripples Guy (aka Paul Wesselman, find him on facebook or youtube or twitter he’s seriously AMAZING!

I guess what I’m trying to say is that it’s true what all of those motivational pins say on Pintrest and Tumblr. Happiness is a mindset, and you have the power right now to choose happiness. Thanksgiving is a reminder of all that we have to be thankful for, and hopefully it is a little easier today to choose to be happy as we stuff ourselves with turkey and gravy, despite the Packers losing horribly this morning (darn…) So by all means make your list, but look at it every day and remind yourself that no matter how dark it seems in your personal tunnel, there is something in your life that will get you through. Sunshine is always brighter once you step out of the darkness and all that. :)

When in doubt, just say: “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” and at least you have a lot to say! (But better use it carefully or it could change your life!) Then say: “I choose to be happy! YAY!” And laugh because you are talking to yourself, just like me. Lucky you! :) Have a blessed and wonderful Thanksgiving and a whole rest of your wonderful life!

What are you thankful for in your life? Is there anything bad or scary that has had something good come of it? (For example: I am thankful I got shots despite being seriously terribly terrified of needles, because it means I am one step closer to my biggest dreams!)
